10 UK Zero Waste & Refillable Deodorants
Are you looking to reduce your plastic in the bathroom? Deodorants are a product many of us apply daily, but can we smell good and lower our waste? Many companies are ditching aerosol cans and offering refillable or low-waste solutions – with companies offering salt sticks and pushable tubes.
Deodorant is part of our morning routine or before a night out. Regarding a deodorant, we want something that smells nice and long-lasting. We love aerosols so much that the average person in a high-income country such as the UK uses around ten aerosol cans a year, and almost all contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Estimates suggest that nearly 40 billion cans of disposable aerosol are used yearly, and demand is rising in lower and middle-income countries.
Sky News (2021) wrote that household aerosols such as air fresheners, deodorants, and furniture polish had overtaken cars as a source of smog-polluting chemicals in the UK. Sky News reported that the paper, published in Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene, revealed that the world's population now uses well over 25 billion cans per year, estimated to release 1.3 million tonnes of VOC air pollution annually. Volatile Organic Compounds could rise to 2.2 million tonnes by 2050, leading to calls for people to switch products.
We can recycle aerosol cans, though Recycle Now says cans must be empty before recycling. Once the can is empty, do not pierce, crush or flatten them; detach any loose or easily removable parts, such as the lid, and dispose of them with the rest of your recycling.

Price | £6.50 per refill
Wild deodorant was the UK's first refillable deodorant and the UK's number 1 natural deodorant. Wild supports multiple charities and has helped 300,000 trees be planted. Wild states that their choice of materials has diverted up to 150 tonnes of waste from landfills.
Wild deodorant utilises a reusable container, as pictured above. Refills are sold in various scents, which fit within the container. If this sounds confusing, do not worry because Wild has produced a video showing how it all works.
Wild has a range of scents to choose from each month, with new limited-time options alongside a case.

Biork

Other Certifications | Cosmos Natural Cosmetics
Other Information | Plastic free
Price | £13.80 (stick and cork) £7.00 (stick)
Biork is a different type of deodorant from the ones on this list. Their deodorant is a high-quality crystal stone naturally made in Central America. They explain that many deodorants glue crystal deodorants together into one block. Biork states they use the heart of a naturally derived potassium alum stone, solid and pure.
Biork is sold worldwide, with Boobalou listed as a retailer on Biork's official site for the UK. The prices listed have been taken from this site.
Some deodorants contain aluminium; however, crystal deodorant stones are made up of a different type of aluminium called alum. The most common form is potassium alum, potassium aluminium sulphate.
Potassium alum (and other alums) is a natural mineral salt made up of molecules too large to absorb by your skin. This forms a protective layer on your skin that inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria.
Once your deodorant has finished, you can compost the cork, send it to a company that accepts cork or re-use it. Biork has made a guide on how you can extend the life of your cork.
