Why I Switched to Scence: A Review of Their Eco-Friendly Deodorant

Deodorant is something many of use each day to help remove the funk from our pits, and with more people seeking eco-friendly options the market is growing, driving innovation and allowing new companies to emerge. Following Wild Deodorant being acquired by Unliever, this left a sour taste in where the company may lead. While Unliever will be able to use their vast trade networks to help expand and keep prices competitive, they are not known for their ethics. Therefore, I ended up jumping ship (metaphorically) and have tried out Scence.

Who it suits

• Those who do not want to buy a refillable case, such as Wild or Fussy
• If you want scents that will stay, unlike brands which offer new ones for a limited time
• If you want to support a woman owned business
• If you have sensitive skin as they do not use bicarbonate of soda or aluminium

• If you want something, you can pick up in your local supermarket/shop
• If you prefer a spray or roll on application

Who Are Scence?

Scence are a small family business based in the south of the United Kingdom creating vegan skincare products. Currently, their products include deodorants, perfumes, body & hand balms as well as face and lip balms. Unlike many brands, Scence uses cardboard for housing their products across all their range making recycling easy and lightweight. Despite this, I have found their casings durable through long-term usage.

While their products are not in mainstream shops, Scence uses RoyalMail helping to get orders to your door quickly, allowing you to restock your favourites. As expected, each order comes in cardboard packaging and uses paper-based tape too.

What Scents Does Scence Offer?

Scence offer a range of products as mentioned above; therefore I will only cover their deodorant range of scents in this section. Currently, the company offers a wide variety, which I will bullet point below. All the different scents are the same price and weight.

• Pure — Unscented.
• Citrus Paradisi — Zesty grapefruit aroma.
• Earty Spice — A blend with patchouli and black pepper essential oils.
• Fragrant Berry — Made with juniper berry essential oil.
• Fresh Cedar — Woody blend of cedarwood and frankincense. (One I use)
• Lavender Mint — Offers a fresh, herbal mint aroma.
• Mellow Sage — A sweet blend of clary sage and ylang ylang.
• Perfect Rose — Has a soft and floral rose geranium aroma.
• Spring Blossom — Made using lily of the valley natural fragrance oil.
• Sweet Citrus — Made with sweet orange and bergamot essential oils.

How To Use Scence Deodorant

Simply break the seal and pull the lid off the top. Push the base with a few fingers until a small amount is showing. Push more up as needed over the coming days, and weeks. The cap is placed back on top to keep the deodorant clean and safe. Scence recommend swiping under each arm two or three times.

What Do I like about the Scence Deodorant?

Scence deodorants do come at a premium cost when compared to other mainstream options; however, I was impressed by how long a single tube of deodorant lasted me. I also appreciate not being trapped into a system of cases, and the push-up system allows me to get every bit from the tube before discarding the packaging.

Verdict

I strongly recommend Scence as a deodorant company for how long the tube managed to last, as well as offering a wide range of scents that are available all the time, unlike some companies.
