Transforming Beauty: How Plastic Freedom is Redefining Skincare Packaging

Transforming Beauty: How Plastic Freedom is Redefining Skincare Packaging

Launched near the end of Plastic Free July, Plastic Freedom potentially has changed the refill market, making it easier, cheaper and more accessible across the United Kingdom. Beth, the owner of Plastic Freedom on social media, told her followers she had been planning these for ages, wanting to make refills accessible to everyone. Additionally, she explained that while her jar return scheme worked, she didn't like the amount of shipping required. Therefore, she launched a new refill scheme, which may fit through your letter box based on a preview of the box dimensions.

Why Refill Products?

Refilling products is a great way to help the environment by lowering the amount of raw materials used in packaging the produce, this often leads to a cheaper cost. Additionally, refills such as the one being used by Plastic Freedom use lightweight packaging, reducing the weight of jars, tins etc, which may need additional packaging to prevent dents and breakages to the container.

Why use the Refill Scheme by Plastic Freedom?

Plastic Freedom's refill scheme is slightly different to most. Some notable brands will refill their branded container when sent to them, which Plastic Freedom used to do, others will sell pouches which can be sent back once the refill has been made. However, Plastic Freedom has removed the two-way postage, saving money and time, furthermore, making a refill scheme easier I feel will make it easier for widespread adoption. Looking at many of the products on offer at Plastic Freedom, a 25% cost reduction is given on most products.

All the products that can be refilled are organised by brand, with individual products available as a separate menu. The dedicated area can be viewed here.

On a side note, it is not mentioned if the container you own should be washed before refilled. Personally, I feel it is best doing so with creams where your fingers come in contact with the inside of the container and product.
