Stationery, while it might not get you excited, it is quintessentially important; whether you are a student, teacher or simply writing a shopping list. Often when you walk into a shop which offers a stationery aisle you see plastic pens, rulers, pencils, and notebooks but do you need another pen or is there any more space in that notebook? Within this blog post, I will be sharing some of eco-friendly stationery which are made from recycled materials, recyclable or refillable.

Personally, stationery is a key part of my job as a teaching assistant; while I use online tools to organise parts of my workflow, I still mark books with pen and jot down notes with a pencil. It was around this time I wondered what eco-friendly stationery is available that I could use at home or in work to support my job and tick my eco credentials. Despite many shops stationery aisles looking the same, I have managed to find stationery that is refillable or recyclable.

## Find Your Stationery

An important step before making any purchase of new stationery is to locate what you have. Personally, I have a draw next to my desk which has various pencils, pens, highlighters, and rubbers. However, I also keep pens in different bags and the pencil cases I take to work. By locating all your stationery and grouping it, you can easily see if you have 4 yellow highlighters and only a green one. More often than not, you will find numerous things that can be reused. Perhaps you will uncover lost stationery, and maybe feel like an archaeologist.

## Forewords

As a teacher I feel like stationery is core, so I have complied a list of what I can find that reduces waste (refillable), recyclable or made with fewer petrochemicals. Decide what you need based on your personal circumstances and what you currently have.

For some areas such as pens, there are many brands offering refills, however for simplicity I will be showcasing one item that I use. I would recommend seeking alternatives that are better or accessible where you live. While some of these items may come at a steeper price, refillable items can easily pay back over time. Finally, if it is not within your budget to seek more environmentally friendly options, consider a few core items.

Please be aware that other retailers like Amazon may stock some of these items, however we have linked to the original seller or an eco-friendly stationery specialist such as [The Green Stationery Company](https://www.greenstat.co.uk/).

Available in 120 sheets, they offer plenty of space for all your notes. Nu has also removed the iconic plastic cover on the front and rear of the book. However, their none evolve range do not have all these benefits.

### ***Rubber***

[Onyx Green Recycled Rubber Erasers](https://www.greenstat.co.uk/onyx-green) – These rubbers by Onyx Green are made from recycled natural rubber, with three distinctive colours and wrapped in a paper sleeve.

Alternatively, TomBow have a rubber made using recycled scallop shells.

### ***Pencils***

[Pentel P200 Automatic Pencils](https://www.pentel.co.uk/product/p200-automatic-pencils/) – Personally I like mechanical pencils and the Pentel P200 is their top-selling model. Pentel offer four sizes of leads (0.3, 0.5, 0.7 or 0.9mm) with a different coloured associated with each. Best of all, you can refill the pencils by pulling off the metal cap at the top and pulling out the provided rubber (which they also sell refills for).

Alternatively, look for pencils made from wood derived from sustainable forests.

### ***Pens***

[Pentel iZee 4 Colour Retractable Ballpoint Pen](https://www.pentel.co.uk/product/pentel-izee-4-colour-bxc470/) – This pen by Pentel offers 4 colours in one refillable pen. Pentel offers 3 different coloured plastics, which come with different inks, so it is best to consider what you commonly use. Refills are available for £0.49 (for two).

Alternatively, look for pens which offer refills, ideally at the same place you purchased the item.

### ***Highlighters***

[Edding Ecoline 24 Bio Text Highlighters](https://www.greenstat.co.uk/recycled-non-bleed-assorted-text-highlighters-pack-of-4-colours) – Edding says their highlighters are made from at least 90% renewable resources and have been awarded the Blue Angel eco-label. Edding Ecoline 24 Bio highlighters can be refilled using [HTK 25](https://www.greenstat.co.uk/edding-highlighter-refill-ink-htk25).

Alternatively, consider highlighter pencils which are similar to colouring pencils, but in pastel colours.

### ***Whiteboard Pens***

[Pilot V Board Master Whiteboard Marker Pen](https://cultpens.com/collections/pilot-whiteboard-markers?productListPgNo=1) – Pilot whiteboard pens available in a larger V style or thinner S (which I use) are affordable, refillable whiteboard pens available in different colours. While I have only used black, the colour is bold. The clear plastic allows you to see when it needs a refill, which can be done within minutes.

Alternatively, look at brands like Edding which offer refills.

### ***Glue Sticks***

[Pritt Stick Glue Stick](https://www.greenstat.co.uk/pritt-stick-glue-stick-43g-pack-of-2-1485357--5) – Made without solvents, this glue offers a strong and long-lasting adhesion while guaranteeing a solid initial tack and low paper wrinkling. Easy to apply, it is a high-quality glue made with 97% natural ingredients, and it is recyclable.

Alternatively, PVA is an option depending on the use case, or some glue sticks can be made from [almonds](https://www.peacewiththewild.co.uk/product/coccoina-natural-glue/) and for schools [U-fill](https://learnplaynexus.com/?s=u-fill) which offers a refillable scheme and free bag to send old refills back to the company.
